With the ongoing doctor shortages in Dawson Creek, we understand how challenging it can be to access timely care, and we’re doing everything we can to help bridge the gap. As Naturopathic Doctors (NDs), we have a broad scope of practice, including the ability to prescribe certain medications. However, it’s important to understand the limitations and specifics of what we can and cannot prescribe.
What We Can Prescribe
Naturopathic doctors in British Columbia undergo extensive training and are licensed to prescribe a wide variety of pharmaceuticals. This includes:
- Antibiotics/antifungals/antivirals
- Hormone therapies
- Thyroid medications
- Blood pressure medications
- Stomach medication
- Topical creams and ointments
- Antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications...
Our prescribing rights give us the flexibility to offer conventional medications alongside natural therapies, providing patients with a balanced, comprehensive approach to healthcare. If you'd like to learn more about our philosophy click here.
What We Cannot Prescribe
Under the federal Controlled Drugs Substances Act and Regulations, naturopathic physicians do not have the authority to prescribe narcotics and controlled drugs, including stimulants, benzodiazepines, and other targeted substances. If your condition requires such medications, you'll need to see the appropriate medical provider.
For a full description of what NDs in British Columbia can prescribe, refer to The Scope of Practice for Naturopathic Physicians: Standards, Limitations and Conditions for Prescribing, Dispensing and Compounding Drugs
If you're seeking a medical family doctor or nurse practitioner, you can register for one here.
If you'd like to make an appointment with one of our naturopathic doctors, you can book online or by calling the office. We are booking new clients at the end of October but also have a waitlist for more urgent care.
